The Project
Supported by the Australian and Queensland Governments, Townsville City Council, James Cook University, and industry partners, NQ SPARK will host and deliver cutting edge simulation capabilities to support science, defence industries, health/medical, emergency response and research capabilities from our base in Townsville, North Queensland.
From our physical base within the James Cook University technology precinct on the Bebegu Yumba campus in Townsville, NQ SPARK will grow a collaborative ecosystem of suppliers, technicians, researchers, and practitioners/trainers committed to excellence in solving real-world problems through cutting-edge simulation which builds Australia’s sovereign capacity.
While NQ SPARK will be equipped with cutting-edge technology, we will also grow and provide human-based training and testing using world standard scenarios, physical training aids, and physical spaces – often the best way to achieve objectives is to use the right people and materials at the right time, and we will do that.

Training
Our facilities enable immersive, realistic training and education in a range of simulated environments underpinned by state-of-the-art technology and infrastructure, powered by in-house high-performance computing capability.
Research
We enhance the current and future digital capabilities of leading research organisations in Northern Queensland and around the world. Our physical location acts as a catalyst for advanced research in tropical environments, marine science, population health and other areas.
Education
Blending virtual and segmented reality into traditional education provides a richer and more effective environment for learning as well as significantly increasing knowledge retention. Our facilities will allow students to gain valuable and extensive hands-on learning in situations normally too costly or unsafe for prolonged use.
Test and Evaluation
North Queensland is rapidly becoming a hub for advanced manufacturing and development. NQ SPARK offers users a controlled and monitored environment for testing and evaluation focussed on tropical and marine environments.
