North Queensland builder appointed for NQ SPARK fit-out

NQ SPARK has taken another major step towards opening later this year, appointing Townsville-based Hurst Constructions Queensland as the principal contractor to deliver its new simulation facility at James Cook University.

NQ SPARK Executive General Manager Cassandra Cazzulino said Hurst Constructions had been selected from a strong field of experienced contractors to deliver the $3 million project.

“NQ SPARK is about building regional capability, and this appointment reflects the expertise that exists within North Queensland to deliver technically complex infrastructure projects,” Ms Cazzulino said.

“It is particularly pleasing that this investment will also support a locally owned and operated business while delivering infrastructure that will benefit the region for many years to come.”

Hurst Constructions will deliver the fit-out and refurbishment of the facility, transforming a former supermarket into a purpose-built “super” simulation and training centre, as well as acting as prime contractor to manage specialist contractors completing the installation of audio visual, security, and simulation infrastructure.

“Working within JCU’s Clinical Practice Building requires careful planning to minimise disruption for neighbouring tenants, including medical facilities, while creating a world-class simulation environment,” Ms Cazzulino said.

Hurst Constructions has built a strong reputation for repurposing existing buildings across the region. Its portfolio includes the Twin Cities Hotel redevelopment, St Patrick’s College Administration Building and the JCU Health Precinct.

Ms Cazzulino said NQ SPARK remained on track to open in by the end of 2026 and was already engaging with foundation users and specialist equipment suppliers, with several contracts already awarded.

A joint initiative of Townsville City Council and James Cook University, NQ SPARK will combine advanced simulation, virtual and augmented reality, and high-performance computing to help organisations improve decision-making, enhance safety and gain richer operational insights without the risks associated with live training.

The facility will also support the creation of digital twins of complex environments, enabling researchers, industry and end users to test concepts, validate equipment and collaborate remotely in highly immersive virtual settings.
