New home for North Queensland Simulation Park (NQ SPARK)

North Queensland’s ground-breaking advanced simulation training centre has found a permanent headquarters, with the $32.2 million training facility soon to undergo a high tech fit-out at James Cook University.

A joint venture of Townsville City Council and James Cook University, NQSPARK will combine advanced simulation, virtual and augmented reality, and high‑performance computing to give key organisations faster decision‑making, safer operation and richer data insights, all without the real‑world risk of live training.

A purpose-built facility at James Cook University

After a period of operation at temporary premises where the NQSPARK team undertook extensive consultation with key stakeholders to better understand the simulation needs of potential customers, NQSPARK has taken possession of its new 1,000m2 space on the ground floor of the Clinical Practice Building at James Cook University’s Bebegu Yumba campus in Douglas. NQSPARK Chair Joe McCabe said the new facility would position the region as a national hub for simulation-based training, research and testing.

At NQSPARK, teams can safely rehearse high‑risk scenarios, from military operations and emergency responses to specialised vehicle and crisis management in controlled but realistic virtual environments, then receive detailed, data‑driven feedback to improve performance.

Organisations can trial new approaches in controlled environments, monitor outcomes in real time, and capture high‑value data to inform future operations.

NQSPARK also enables the creation of digital twins of complex environments, extending physical infrastructure into fully interactive virtual spaces. These environments allow researchers, industry and end‑users to test theories, validate equipment and collaborate remotely at scale.

Fit-out begins ahead of first customers

“A lot of work has gone on in the background to get to this point and commencing today, we will begin a process of fit-out along with our partners and suppliers so we can welcome our first customers around the end of the year.” Unique in Australia, NQSPARK positions North Queensland at the forefront of simulation and immersive technology. By integrating cutting‑edge simulation, augmented and virtual reality, and next‑generation high‑performance computing, NQSPARK creates a dynamic environment supporting training, research, education, testing and evaluation across defence, health, science and similar industry sectors.

Collaboration, security and regional impact

NQSPARK’s development is underpinned by strong collaboration across government, defence, health, research and industry. Key collaborations already include Advance Queensland, Australian Defence Force, Australian Institute of Marine Science, CUBIC Defence Australia, James Cook University, Townsville City Council, Townsville Hospital and Health Service, alongside a growing network of engaged collaborators. Townsville Mayor Nick Dametto said Council was a proud partner of NQSPARK and he was excited to see what the facility would deliver for the Townsville region into the future. “This facility will create opportunities and position Townsville at the forefront of training and hi-tech simulation,” Cr Dametto said. “NQSPARK’s mission to enhance Australia’s capabilities in advanced simulation technologies is of national importance, and we get to do that right in our own backyard.” NQSPARK provides a trusted, platform-agnostic, neutral environment where multiple commercial vendors can collaborate on critical programs without compromising intellectual property or security. NQSPARK allows even competitors to collaborate by providing sovereign IT infrastructure as a service, enabling vendors to run their own simulation platforms in secure, independently governed environments. This enables collaboration, integration, and testing while ensuring all data, intellectual property, and compute remain protected, confidential, and within Australian systems.
